Vision Needs Are In Focus (as published by the Bristol Press)

BRISTOL - Della Porta Eyecare provides comprehensive, comfortable and caring services says owner Maria Della Porta.

Della Porta Eyecare opened about five months ago at its location at 271 Farmington Ave. Since then, Della Porta says things have been going well and her patients have been “very welcoming.”

“This is the first business that I’ve owned but I’ve been employed for eye care practices for 17 years,” said Della Porta. “I’ve worn glasses and contact lenses since I was a child and without them I wouldn’t be able to see the world in front of me. I find helping people to be able to have better vision to be very rewarding and satisfying.”

Della Porta said she chose this particular location in Bristol because it was an established practice and it was also close to where she lives in Southington.

“I’m from Southington, but Bristol is where I went to school, at St. Paul Catholic High School,” she added.

Della Porta said that patients “feel welcome” at her practice.

“We try to provide a comfortable and caring environment for patients,” she said. “We also want patients to feel that their concerns are being addressed. We take a comprehensive approach to eye care. They say that eyes are the window to the soul, but they are also a window to your health.”

Della Porta said that in addition to offering comprehensive eye exams and providing patients with glasses and contact lenses, she is able to diagnose other diseases whose symptoms affect the eyes, such as diabetes, macular degeneration, hypertension, thyroid disease and high cholesterol.

“We also do emergency visits with same-day appointments if someone has red eyes, eye pain or something in their eye,” she said. “I am able to refer patients to an eye surgeon and then they can come back here the day after for subsequent visits.”

Della Porta Eyecare also participates in the “Infantsee” program by the American Optometrists Association, which provides free eye screenings to children 6 to 12 months old.

Going forward, Della Porta said that she wants to expand her practice’s focus on dry eyes. She said that there are a lot of people with that problem in the Bristol area.

Della Porta Eyecare also strives to be involved in the local community. On Saturdays, her staff has a “dress down” jean day where they also provide donations to the local school system. Della Porta Eyecare has also donated socks to Brian’s Angels and made donations to support breast cancer research in October. They contributed to Toys for Tots for Christmas.
